7. Molecular Visualization on the Web

As the author of MolView.org, I have dealt with some 3D molecular visualization on the web. In fact, somone else here, Dr. Hanson, is the maintainer of an entire visualization platform called Jmol! Now you might think that visualization is difficult, but guess what, it's not ;-). In this module I'm going to lead you through various steps enabling you to create a very simple website in your web browser that has a 3D molecule viewer with some structure in it. If you have zero experience in programming or web development, that's ok, what counts is your commitment!

While not the generator of this project, I do expect to get questions relating to it. I will Q: What is the time frame for this project? Deadline? Q: As it will be your project, do you have any ideas what you might want to visualize?

I did not intend this to be a project. Bob turned it into a project after the special topics were dismissed I believe. I am not sure what exactly this should be as a project. I would say the programming projects should be mostly up to the students where I (and you if you want) can have a supportive role. I don't believe in project assignments (strongly dislike getting them myself), the students should come up with something they love and then I can give some helpful directions. I could coin some rough ideas for inspiration.

Dear S04 (a more human name would be helpful here!), Sorry about the wording above. Herman is just saying that the wording you see there was intended for another purpose. Just realize that while Herman and I are here to help, it's got to be your project. The wording there about "leading you..." was in reference to a proposed module not a project. Both Herman and I will be very happy to assist you in any web-based visualization project that you come up with. My suggestions for getting going on this:

  1. Bounce one or more ideas off us and see what we think.
  2. Take a look at what is out there already that might be similar to what you think you might want to do.
  3. Help us out by giving us some idea of your background.

I would recommend you do this by email directly with us, not in this comment/reply format. My email address is hansonr@stolaf.edu. Way simpler working with you that way, I think. We could also Skype if you are interested.

S04 has some very good ideas, but he was a bit disappointed. He is exploring a different project now. We need to remember that a lot of our students are new to this area. They are interested in Cheminformatics and want to learn while engaging in guided-project experiences. They will need help and guidance to develop and execute their ideas related to the project. This has been my understanding of student projects all along that students will propose an idea for a project topic and receive guidance for completing the project successfully.
